Typical 3BR/2BA rents near $2,275 a month versus roughly $2,300 in principal and interest on a $425,000 purchase: the October 2026 rent-versus-buy picture in Moore County, NC.

Should I rent or buy? It's one of the most common questions I hear, and the honest answer is that it depends on your situation. Here's a snapshot of the October 2026 trade-off in Moore County, NC.

The rent side

Let's start with renting, because that is where most rent-versus-buy conversations begin in our area. There were 113 three-bedroom, two-bathroom homes on the rental market in Moore County in October 2026, and 49 of them rented during the month.

Removing the highest and lowest prices, monthly rents for three-bedroom, two-bathroom rentals ranged from about $1,650 to $2,900, putting a typical rent in that range at roughly $2,275 a month.

The buy side

Now for the owning option. With the October 2026 median sales price of $425,000 and a 20% down payment, a 30-year fixed mortgage at a rate around 7.2% (the national average in early November 2026) would run roughly $2,300 a month in principal and interest, before property taxes, insurance, and HOA fees, which add on top.

Rent vs. buy at a glance

Monthly costOctober 2026
Typical monthly rent (3BR/2BA)~$2,275
Mortgage principal + interest on $425,000 with 20% down at ~7.2%~$2,300 plus taxes, insurance, HOA

What this means

The monthly cash costs are surprisingly close right now. Renting can look cheaper at first because it has no down payment or maintenance, but buying builds equity, locks in your housing cost over time, and comes with tax advantages.

Renting keeps you flexible and avoids the risks of ownership. The decision depends on how long you plan to stay, your savings, and what matters to you.

A few things to remember

  • Rates and prices vary, and these numbers are a snapshot of one market in one month, not a promise about the future.
  • This is an illustration, not an offer of credit.
  • The best move is to talk through your numbers with a local lender and a Realtor who knows the market.

Experience isn't expensive, it's priceless!
