Pinehurst vs. Southern Pines: Which Is Right for You?

Pinehurst and Southern Pines are next-door neighbors with two different personalities: resort-like golf village quiet versus a lively, walkable downtown. A practical comparison to help you find the right fit.

One of the first questions I hear from people moving to the Sandhills is a good one: Pinehurst or Southern Pines? Both towns are wonderful places to live, but they have different personalities, and the right choice depends on the lifestyle you are looking for.

Pinehurst at a glance

Pinehurst is known around the world for golf, and that reputation shapes the town in the best way. The Village is charming and walkable, with boutiques, restaurants, and that classic resort feel. Many neighborhoods are established and tree-lined, and if golf matters to you, there is nowhere better.

Life in Pinehurst tends to feel a little more resort-like and quiet. It is a place where people come to enjoy the pace, the beauty, and the community.

Southern Pines at a glance

Southern Pines has a lively downtown with a personality all its own. Historic brick buildings, the train station, independent shops, great restaurants, breweries, and a busy calendar of events give it a more energetic, artsy feel. It is walkable in a different way, and there is almost always something happening downtown.

Southern Pines tends to attract people who want a little more action within walking distance, along with the same beautiful pine country surroundings.

How to think about the choice

A few questions can help you decide:

  • Where do you like to spend your time? If your ideal Saturday is a round of golf and a quiet dinner, Pinehurst may fit. If you want to stroll downtown, browse shops, and catch live music, Southern Pines may be your spot.
  • What kind of neighborhood do you want? Both towns have a range of options, from golf course communities to historic homes to newer neighborhoods. The right fit depends on the details.
  • Where will you commute? Think about work, school, and the places you visit most. The two towns are close, but daily drives add up.

The good news is that you do not have to choose the whole area. Pinehurst and Southern Pines sit right next to each other, and plenty of people live in one and enjoy the other all the time.

If you are comparing the two, I would love to help you look at homes in both and find the neighborhood that feels like home. That is the fun part of moving here, and I enjoy helping people discover it.

Experience isn't expensive, it's priceless!
