One district, one destination high school for most of the Sandhills, and a feeder pattern worth understanding before you sign an offer.
The feeder pattern that matters
Moore County Schools is the district for all of Moore County, and most families in Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Whispering Pines, and West End feed into Pinecrest High School, the district's largest high school, at 250 Voit Gilmore Lane in Southern Pines. Pinecrest draws from two middle schools, Southern Middle and West Pine Middle, and those draw in turn from Southern Pines, Pinehurst, West End, Aberdeen, and West Pine elementaries, plus McDeeds Creek.
Pinehurst Elementary, a K-5 North Carolina Blue Ribbon School, is the flagship elementary near the Village. The practical takeaway for buyers: your address determines your school, so the school conversation has to happen before the offer, not after.
The questions parents actually ask
Which school will my street feed? Ask Moore County Schools directly or run the zone information on the district site (ncmcs.org). Real estate lists and street maps get the pattern mostly right, but zones shift, so verify the exact address before you commit.
Can my kids switch schools? Student assignment depends on space and policy, and the district's answer is the only authoritative one. Families relocating from out of state should enroll as early as the assignment allows.
What about private options? Several independent schools operate in the Sandhills, and many local families choose them for the early years. Tour both routes, and let the kids weigh in.
The wrap
When you narrow your search to two or three streets, confirm the feeder and the bus stop with the school office before you offer. It takes one phone call, and it turns the school question from a worry into a checked box.
